Water colour mixing in a Portrait

Our instructor Caroline Marsland started her demo on how to use colour mixing in painting a portrait with the following

Colour mixing -portrait

Paint colours used
Crimson
Yellow ochre
Ultramarine
Burnt Sienna
Verdin Green

Draw & then check for shadows & then wash drawing with water
Use largish brush
Let dry
When paper wet possible to get soft or gentle blend
If paint dries add fresh covering of water which can soften lines

Start with shadow to establish structure
The sharper edges of paint can be softened with water
To cool down shadows use blue
Slowly build up the tonal values

Detail such as eyes, mouth and nose come later
Eyes are usually the first thing the viewer looks at
Use deep red and blue for definition
When the details added this will make the shadowed areas ‘fall back’

Paint can be mixed on wet paper but caution that paper doesn’t lift or separate better to initially let dry and put on additional water.

Better to use mixture of colours to make black. More subtle.
Areas left white or low tonal values stand forward.#

Dupont 2021 Art Exhibition. A Wonderful Success!

The Dupont Art Club has just completed a successful Annual Art Exhibition. Our Chair could not have put it more succinctly in his following recap.

“We were a little concerned about our Art Show, as we were holding it in October not August and were still in the Covid Pandemic. But, as we had 110 pictures on show and 440 visitors, it was a wonderful success, so we need not have worried!
I was extremely pleased of the high standard of the art work, a number of visitors remarked on what a great selection of quality artwork we were showing.

The Dupont shop looked stunning and made sales of over £450, our thanks go to Tina Stiles O’Brien and Judy Alexander who organised the shop.

Our special thanks go to Judy, not only for manning the shop over the three days, but also for providing her credit card reader which enabled us to sell pictures and gifts paid for on line.

We sold 13 pictures, one visitor bought 3! And because of their high standard of work, Victor Perkins and Carol Cleveland both received a commission for a new painting.

So thank you all those that took part and helped with manning the show, in particular the new members who joined us recently.

Once again the competition to select the Dupont artist of the year was the highlight.
Zoella Reardon was the runner up with her painting “Autumn”. Congratulations Zoella. I hope you enjoy the wine.

The Dupont artist of the year and the winner of the Dupont cup was Victor Perkins with his drawing “Leena”. Congratulations Victor.

“Leena” by Victor Perkins

He was presented with a bottle of champagne and a certificate to record his win.

Numbers at sessions are increasing every week with many new members; they are very welcome and hopefully will be able to take part in next year’s Art Show.”

Dupont Art Annual Exhibition

This year was a successful year for the Dupont Art Club’s annual art exhibition.

We saw close to 500 people attend with over £1000.00 in sales. We were pleased with these numbers considering the poor weather for half of the days. This year we set up a separate area for our gifts and cards which proved very popular and successful with sales better then ever.

There were many people voicing an interest in joining this September which would be lovely. We also had a delightful lady sit down at the piano and give a impromptu recital. We captured her pictured with John Hird enjoying the music.

The  peoples choice award was won by Pam Monk. This beautiful oil painting was called ‘the Sting’. The runner up was Carol Cleveland with her painting of Prince.

All in all, it was a successful exhibition with many people commenting on how professional the paintings were painted and exhibited.
